Welcome to my blog!In 2012, I created this blog to share my experience working in a hospital fixing medical equipment in Tanzania. Right after I came back from Tanzania, I studied abroad in Costa Rica on a Global Health program. I was so busy in Costa Rica that I never updated my blog! Now (2014) I'll be in Nicaragua coordinating the medical equipment program. I promise to keep you all updated as much as possible! **Mom, to read the posts you have to click "Blog Posts" in the orange toolbar up top.
So. What am I doing? Well, in 2012 I participated in the Engineering World Health Foundation's (EWH) Summer Institute in Arusha, Tanzania for 2 months, funded by DukeEngage. We took Swahili and technical classes for one month, followed by volunteering as medical equipment repairmen for another! Then, 24 hours after my plane returned to Houston, I flew off to Costa Rica, where I studied abroad with the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) Tropical Medicine and Global Health program. (Maybe I'll upload some pictures and stories from that some other time....) This summer, instead of participating in the EWH program in Tanzania as a student, I'm the "On The Ground Coordinator" (OTGC) for the Nicaragua program. Basically, I help make sure all the administrative stuff is running smoothly, maintain relationships with the hospital contacts, and check in on all the students to see how they are doing. I'll be traveling every few days to visit all of their hospitals and help them out with any repairs. I booked my flights 10 days before my work contract and 2 weeks after it, so I'll be able to travel on solo vacation as well. Follow my blog to stay updated with what's happening throughout my trips! |
NicaraguaI'll be in Nicaragua from June 5th to August 5th, 2014. The program is based out of Granada, a beautiful old Spanish colonial town. But since the hospitals are all in different towns, I'll be traveling between them. Nicaragua is super hot and humid, and I'm going during the rainy season. Good thing Houston has me prepared for nasty weather!
TanzaniaI'll was in Tanzania from June 20th to August 20th, 2012. Arusha is a city near the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. If you're imagining sweltering heat and sprawling lowlands, think again! The average high in Arusha is around 60°F (16°C), and it's at about the same elevation as Denver, Colorado.
Fun FactMy blog title means "Dreams come true" in a combination of Spanish and Swahili.
